Mission: The X-13 was designed to explore the feasibility of building a pure-jet vertical takeoff and landing aircraft operating in an unconventional vertical attitude. It was a very successful program. A single Rolls-Royce Avon RA.28-49 axial-flow turbojet engine provided power.
