X-15
Mission: The X-15 was built specifically to explore the hypersonic (Mach 5-plus) speed regime at extremely high altitudes. It is arguably the most successful high-performance research aircraft program in history. In its final version, the X-15 was powered by a single Reaction Motors Inc. XLR99 rocket engine.
