Mission: The second first-generation X-1 was modified with an improved windscreen and canopy, an upgraded cockpit with ejection seat, a more powerful Reaction Motors XLR11 rocket engine, and, most importantly, a super-thin wing (four percent thickness/chord ratio) all specific to meeting NACA high-speed research requirements.
