Mission: The X-31A was designed to investigate extremely high angle-of-attack maneuverability and its practical application to future fighter aircraft. It was one of the few X-plane programs to involve a non-US company (Messerschmitt Bölkow Blohm). A single General Electric F404-GE-400 turbofan engine powered it.
