24 October: First Flight
The X-35A lifts off for first flight at 9:06 a.m. Pacific Time on its historic and successful first flight. Test pilot Tom Morgenfeld flies the supersonic stealth aircraft from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Palmdale, California, to the US Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB. The X-35A, a conventional takeoff and landing variant designed to meet US Air Force specifications, also satisfies testing elements of the X-35B, the US Marine Corps, and the British Royal Navy and Royal Air Force versions.
