AFTI/F-16 Goes JSF “Electric”

The AFTI/F-16 answers the call to duty one more time to flight test a revolutionary flight-control and power system planned for the JSF. The system, called JSF Integrated Subsystems Technology or J/IST, provides power-on-demand electrical system and electric actuation of flight-control surfaces that replace the heavy and maintenance-prone hydraulic systems on current aircraft. US government studies show the combination of technologies will reduce takeoff weight, increase survivability, and trim costs of the JSF. Company test pilot Steve Barter performed the test flights, which began on 24 October. Subsequent flights expanded the flight envelope.
