18 November: UK Pilot
BAE Systems test pilot Simon Hargreaves logs more than one hour of flight time during two separate flights that include aerial refueling, formation flying, and climbing to 25,000 feet. RAF Squadron Leader Justin Paines then takes a turn in the cockpit, executing formation flying and air-refueling at 23,000 feet. The airplane met and exceeded my expectations, Paines says. The handling qualities were excellent in all axes
close-formation and air-to-air tracking were amongst the easiest and most precise to fly of any airplane Ive evaluated. Hargreaves and Paines become the fifth and sixth pilots to fly the X-35A.
