21 November: JSF Goes Supersonic

The X-35A breaks the sound barrier to continue an aggressive program of flight-envelope expansion. Company test pilot Tom Morgenfeld lifts off from Edwards AFB and takes the X-35A to 25,000 feet, achieving a speed of Mach 1.05. Earlier that day, Morgenfeld practiced aircraft-carrier approaches and declared the airplane’s low-speed handling characteristics to be excellent. “I’d take it to the ship right now,” he said.
