31 January: X-35C Goes Supersonic
|
|
The X-35C became the second Lockheed Martin JSF demonstrator to exceed the speed of sound in a series of flights. In two separate supersonic envelope-expansion flights, test pilot Joe Sweeney climbed to 25,000 feet and accelerated to Mach 1.05, then to Mach 1.10, validating the Navy JSFs supersonic performance. The flights were the first in a series designed for testing the X-35C at increasingly higher supersonic speeds and among the last before flying the aircraft transcontinental to the US Navy flight test center at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. The X-35A previously broke the sound barrier last November. |
