23 March: X-35B Completes Hover Pit Testing


Hover pit testing of the X-35B STOVL propulsion system was completed on schedule in Palmdale, California, confirming that the X-35B’s unique shaft-driven lift fan propulsion system produces abundant vertical lift, lower exhaust temperatures, and a more acceptable ground environment than traditional direct-lift systems. The tests also showed hot-gas reingestion problems typical in conventional STOVL designs were eliminated during operation. “STOVL temperature and velocity measurements were even better than predicted, and we achieved sustained, full operational thrust,” said Harry Blot, deputy program manager for the Lockheed Martin JSF. “This test result not only positions the X-35B for STOVL flight this summer, but also means that no further engine development is needed to meet JSF STOVL requirements. The Pratt & Whitney engine and Rolls-Royce lift fan performed beautifully.”
