Hot Pit Certified

The F-22 was certified for hot-pit refueling operations at Edwards AFB after five months of research, training, and demonstrations. This certification means the F-22 can be refueled on the ground while the engines are operating. Hot pit refueling usually takes place on a parking pad adjacent to a runway. After hot refueling, the F-22 can quickly return to the skies to continue expanding the flight and avionics envelope. This capability was brought forward in the test schedule to add flexibility when tanker support is not available.
