US service members began delivering humanitarian aid to Iran in the wake of a late-December earthquake that left an estimated 25,000 Iranians dead in the city of Bam. Shortly afterward, the US military began deploying more than 150,000 pounds of medical supplies. These were the first US aircraft to land in Iran since the end of the Iranian hostage crisis in 1981. At least seven C130 Hercules flights went from Kuwait to Kerman, the Iranian provincial capital near the affected areas. In addition, a C-5 Galaxy crew from Dover AFB, Delaware, and a C-17 crew from Charleston AFB, South Carolina, delivered personnel, rescue teams, and equipment to Kerman.
