Shortly after midnight on 1 April, Lt. Col. Don Gresham, 436th Operations Group chief of special capabilities at Dover AFB, Delaware, brought the C-5 Special Operations Low Level II mission to a close after twenty-two years. The C-5 special operations crews specialized in blacked-out operations with night-vision goggles. Some of these SOLL II missions included heavy equipment and personnel airdrop and hot refueling of helicopters in forward locations. Although many missions remain secret, the C-5 SOLL II crews contributed to operations Just Cause, Desert Shield/Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. The SOLL II mission originated with the C-141 and will now be taken over by C-17 crews.
