Air Force Reservists in the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, received two awards in March for their work during the 2004 storm season. The squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters, received the Meteorology Award during the 27th Annual National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans for its achievements during one of the most furious storm seasons in history. The 53rd WRS later received the 2004 Richard H. Hagemeyer Award at the 2005 Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference in Jacksonville, Florida, for its heroic efforts and contributions to the nation's hurricane warning program. The squadron logged more than eighty flights into tropical storms and hurricanes last August and September and, at times, tracked two storms simultaneously.
