The US Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, performed its 4,000th airshow at Robins AFB, Georgia, on 13 May. The demonstration squadron was officially activated on 23 May 1953 and flew its first show sixteen days later at Luke AFB, Arizona. The Thunderbirds first operated the F-84G, transitioning thereafter through the F-84F, F-100C, F-105B, F-100D, F-4E, and T-38A before converting to the F-16A in 1983 and to the F-16C in 1992. The Thunderbirds have flown more than 1,500 performances in the F-16. They flew the 1,000th demonstration in 1965, the 2,000th in 1976, and the 3,000th in 1990. The Thunderbirds, based at Nellis AFB, Nevada, will perform seventy shows in thirty-five states this year.
