Sea Control Squadron 41 (VS-41), the S-3 Viking training squadron, embarked aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) in March to qualify the final two S-3 Category 1 pilots, new aviators who have never flown in the fleet before. The carrier qualification is the last training milestone for the pilots. To qualify, the aviators completed two day sessions and two night sessions of flight operations, which included touch-and-goes and successful traps, or landings, aboard the Stennis. Lt. (j.g.) Michael Huntsman was the last pilot to complete initial carrier qualification in the Viking. VS-41, known as Shamrocks, is scheduled for disestablishment this September. The Viking is scheduled for retirement from US Navy service in 2009.
