A US Marine Corps KC-130J aircraft suffered a severely damaged aileron during a rocket attack in Iraq on 10 April. No spares were available to replace the damaged aileron. Ailerons from older KC-130s are not interchangeable on a KC-130J. A Lockheed Martin team in Marietta, Georgia, developed a plan to take an aileron from the production line, deliver it to Iraq, and have an additional assembly ready to minimize production delays. A crew from MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, picked up the aileron on 27 April in Marietta, returned to Cherry Point, and transferred the part to an aircraft departing for the Middle East. Total time from contract award to shipment: seven working days.
