Patrol Squadron 65 (VP-65), a Naval Reserve P-3 unit stationed at NAS Point Mugu, California, was formally disestablished during ceremonies at the squadron hangar on 4 March. Among the 300-plus people attending the ceremony were several past commanding officers of the squadron. Known as the Tridents, VP-65 was established in November 1970 during a major reorganization of the Naval Air Reserve Force. Since its inception, VP-65 received the AVCM Donald M. Neal Award, the Golden Wrench, four times for excellence in aircraft maintenance; the Golden Anchor three times for retention excellence; and the Noel Davis Battle "E" Trophy for battle efficiency three times.
