Singapore Accepts
First F-16 With Color Cockpit
The Republic of Singapore Air Force accepted the first new production Block 52 F-16 to incorporate a color cockpit as part of the Peace Carvin III program. The aircraft, an F-16C delivered in November, is the first of twelve new production F-16s produced under a 1997 announcement. The delivery also marks the second batch of F-16s produced in twenty-four months, a time span compressed from the typical thirty-six months through commercial practices and lean manufacturing processes. Peace Carvin III represents the third F-16 buy for the Republic of Singapore Air Force.
The color displays, composed of liquid crystal flat panels, move color cockpits a step beyond that currently available in other fighter aircraft. Developed as part of the F-16 Mid-Life Update program, the displays increase reliability and visibility in daylight conditions. The US Air Force will incorporate the color displays in new production Block 50 F-16s in 2000. |
