P-38 LightningP-38 Restoration Way Up North

The 3rd Fighter Wing is restoring a rare Lockheed P-38 Lightning G model. The P-38 is to go on display at a heritage air park at the wing’s headquarters at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. The current project was begun under the direction of the former 11th Air Force commander, Lt. Gen. Dave McCloud, who died in an aircraft crash in 1998. The P-38, when com-pleted, will be a memorial not only as the WWII aircraft flown by the 54th Squadron, but also as a tribute to McCloud. The Lightning being restored bellied in while strafingP-38 Lightning Japanese invaders at Attu Island, Alaska. The pilot was rescued, but the aircraft sat in the salty air from 1942 to 1998. With donated resources, the wing salvaged the aircraft and began the restoration. A non-profit organization has been established for fund raising and all labor has been donated.
