Kunsan Gets Block 40

The 8th FW at Kunsan AB in Korea entered the first of more than twenty Block 40 F-16 Fighting Falcons into its inventory last November. The aircraft, which replace Block 30 F-16s, are assigned to the 35th FS. The Block 40 F-16 is equipped with LANTIRN and night vision goggles to give the Wolf Pack of the 35th day or night, all-weather flight. The aircraft are also equipped with an improved data modem, which allows the pilot to monitor the relative position of other IDM-equipped aircraft on the cockpit multifunction display. The IDM also permits air liaison officers assigned to ground units to transmit real-time target information directly into the cockpit of inbound aircraft. The Block 40 F-16s at Kunsan join those at Osan AB to produce an all-Block 40 force of USAF F-16s in Korea. Kunsan will receive eighteen F-16C models and three D models by early 2001.
