Joe Sweeney, director of flight operations for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, was inducted as a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots at the organizations forty-fifth international symposium held in Los Angeles last September. This distinction, one of the highest honors in the organization, is bestowed on the basis of stringent professional requirements and technical achievements.
Sweeney, who was project pilot for the X-35C version of the JSF concept demonstration aircraft, has accumulated more than 4,700 hours of flight time in jet, propeller, and rotary-wing aircraft in thirty years of flying. He is a former Navy test pilot and has flown nearly every version of the F-16 since joining LM Aeronautics in 1985. He was project pilot for F-16 digital flight controls, the F-16 Multi-Axis Thrust Vectoring demonstrator aircraft, the initial F-16 conformal fuel tank demonstrations, and the F-16 diverterless supersonic inlet flights.
