Air Force Academy officials in Colorado named Maj. Julian M. Chesnutt the winner of the 2001 Jabara Award for Airmanship. Chesnutt, a 1989 graduate of the academy, earned the honors for his outstanding contributions to airpower, including thirty-eight combat missions over Serbia and Kosovo. The Jabara Award is named in honor of Col. James Jabara, Americas first jet ace. It is given annually to an Air Force Academy graduate whose actions directly associated with an aerospace vehicle set him or her apart from contemporaries. Among other accomplishments, Chesnutt was awarded the Silver Star and recognized as the 16th Air Forces Pilot of the Year for his skill and heroism in the course of a strike mission during Operation Allied Force. Chesnutt, flying at the time for the 555th FS at Aviano AB in Italy, led a strike mission against a target in the heart of the most heavily defended area of Yugoslavia. |
