Three Air Force organizations were recognized by Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz for earning 2001 Secretary of Defense Maintenance Awards. The Air Force recipients are the 62nd and 446th Aircraft Generation Squadrons, McChord AFB, Washington, for the medium category; and the 20th FW, Shaw AFB, South Carolina, for the large category. The annual awards recognize the most significant weapon system and equipment maintenance achievements within the Department of Defense. The awards were presented during a Pentagon ceremony in October.
The 20th FW, the US Air Forces largest F-16 wing, operates four squadrons of Block 50 F-16s. The wing flies the suppression of enemy air defense mission, which is in high demand for combat and peacekeeping operations. This wing has been operating F-16s since 1982, has undergone conversions to four different versions of the F-16, and has been awarded the prestigious DoD Maintenance Award on several previous occasions.
