Taiwan F-16 Wing Becomes Operational

The 4th Tactical Fighter Wing became Taiwan’s first F-16 operational unit in December with a commission ceremony held at Chiayi AFB. Chen Shui-Bian, president of Taiwan, inspected eighteen Block 20 F-16A/Bs on the ground as twenty-four F-16A/Bs passed overhead. Taiwan F-16s are divided into two wings, one at Chiayi AFB and one at Hualien AFB. The 4th Wing at Chiayi AFB consists of the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd Tactical Fighter Squadrons under the 4th operational group as well as the 14th Operational Conversion Unit. The 21st TFS was activated in October 1997 and the 22nd and 23rd in July and December 1998, respectively. The 14th OCU was activated in November 1999. The first Block 20 F-16 arrived in Taiwan in April 1997. A total of 150 F-16s have been delivered to Taiwan’s Air Force.
