Air Combat Command announced on 27 October that the 27th Fighter Squadron will be the first deployable squadron to transition to the F/A-22 Raptor when aircraft deliveries to Langley AFB, Virginia, begin later this year. The 27th FS, known as The Fightin' Eagles, dates back to World War I and is the Air Force's oldest fighter squadron. The 71st FS and 94th FS, the other two squadrons that form the 1st FW, will transition to the F/A-22 at later dates. The squadrons are expected to be equipped with twenty-four aircraft each.
