Firefighting Hercs

Firefighting Hercs All eight ANG and AFRC C-130 aircraft equipped with the modular airborne firefighting system were called in to support the wildland firefighting effort in California in late October. Crews flying two MAFFS-equipped C-130Hs each from the Guard's 146th. 145th, and 153rd Airlift Wings based at Channel Islands ANGS, California, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, respectively, and Reserve crews from the 302nd Airlift Wing, Peterson AFB, Colorado, flew missions against the fires that burned nearly 800,000 acres. All units were released on 2 November when the fires were brought under control. The MAFFS-equipped C-130s are called in only after all local and state commercial assets have been used.
