During the 1991 Gulf War, Salam Shalaam, an Iraqi Air Force MiG-23 pilot, was jumped by two American F-16s. One pilot told him, "Eject or you will be dead." Shalaam ejected. On 7 December, Shalaam got another look at an F-16 — inside a shelter at Balad AB. A guest of the 421st Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, Col. Shalaam, a liaison officer for the Iraqi Multi-National Force, said, "This is a dream come true to see the F 16 and meet American pilots. On behalf of the free Iraqi people, I want to thank you for bringing peace to my country. I look forward to working with you in the future."
