Crews from VP-16 made a dramatic impact in the war on drugs last fall, supporting three interdictions that confiscated more than forty-one metric tons of cocaine with a street value of more than $2 billion. Crews from the NAS Jacksonville, Florida-based P-3C unit, and a Naval Reserve crew from VP-65 at NAS Point Mugu, California, in one week tracked two vessels found to be carrying 14.5 and thirteen tons of cocaine respectively. Later, a Customs P-3 crew spotted a third vessel near Manta, Ecuador. A VP-16 crew relieved the Customs aircraft and maintained surveillance until the Coast Guard intercepted the vessel. More than fourteen tons of cocaine was found.
