In December, Santa Claus continued a thirty-seven-year tradition by making a special trip with an Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, C-130H crew to deliver Christmas presents and supplies to a remote Athabascan settlement. In 1967, what is now known as the 517th Airlift Squadron learned the community of Arctic Village was in danger of going hungry. The unit responded by flying the village hunters closer to a herd of caribou whose migration pattern had changed and then transporting the meat back to the village. The next year, the squadron flew to Arctic Village loaded with food, supplies, and Santa, who had packed gifts for the village's children. An annual tradition began.
