The 164th Airlift Wing, the Tennessee Air National Guard unit based at the Memphis-Shelby County International Airport, formally kicked off its conversion from the C-141B to the C-5A in ceremonies on 1 October. Gen. John W. Handy, commander of US Transportation Command and Air Mobility Command and Lt. Gen. William Welser III, 18th Air Force commander, were among the dignitaries present. Personnel from the 436th Airlift Wing at Dover AFB, Delaware, are providing training for the Tennessee ANG crews and maintainers. Some of Dover's C-5As are being transferred to Memphis as well. The 164th AW had flown C-141s since April 1992 after converting from early model C-130s.
