Egyptian Ferry Search

Egyptian Ferry Search A US Navy P-3 Orion crew from Patrol Squadron 47 (VP-47) assisted search and rescue operations for survivors of the sunken Egyptian ferry Al Salam Boccaccio 98 on 4 February after the ferry sank in the Red Sea. The ferry, carrying an estimated 1,400 passengers, sank roughly fifty miles off the coast of Egypt on 3 February. The VP-47 crew, homeported at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, flew for almost fifteen hours to assist Egyptian authorities in the search efforts. The crew searched for and guided ships to survivors throughout the night and into the morning using the P-3's infrared detection capability.
