The Italian Air Force carried delegates from the International Olympic Committee from Turin, Italy, to Olympia, Greece, aboard a C-130J for the torch lighting ceremony commemorating the opening of the XX Olympic Winter Games. The lighting ceremony was held 27 November in the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium. Another C-130J crew flew back to Greece on 6 December to pick up the Olympic flame and transport it in a special container to Ciampino Airport in Rome to begin the Olympic Torch Relay. The history of the Olympic flame dates back to the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. The torch relay made its first appearance at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.
