The 27th Fighter Squadron at Langley AFB, Virginia, the oldest fighter squadron in the US Air Force, carried out the first operational missions with the F-22 Raptor on 21-22 January, flying air defense missions over the continental United States as part of Operation Noble Eagle. Since the 11 September 2001 terror attacks on the United States, North American Aerospace Defense Command fighters have responded to more than 2,000 air events within the United States and Canada and have flown more than 40,000 sorties in support of Operation Noble Eagle. Col. Thomas Bergeson and Lt. Col. James Hecker, the 27th FS commander, flew the first F-22 mission.
