Record Season For Hurricane Hunters

Record Season For Hurricane Hunters The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Keesler AFB, Mississippi, recorded its busiest season ever, flying 124 missions for the National Weather Service during the 2005 hurricane season. The unit recorded nearly 1,200 hours flying into hurricanes last year, the first hurricane season the 53rd WRS used its new WC-130J Weatherbirds exclusively. After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on 31 August, the 53rd WRS, known as the Hurricane Hunters, relocated to Dobbins ARB, Georgia, and remained there until 2 November. The 53rd WRS completed conversion to the WC-130J on 12 January 2006 as the squadron's last 1960s-era WC-130H was transferred to the 913th Airlift Wing at Willow Grove ARS, Pennsylvania.
