. . . Completes First Tests . . .

F-35 Take Off During the three-week deployment at Edwards AFB, California, most of the activity with the F-35A centered on crucial tests that validated the aircraft's ability to shut down and restart its Pratt & Whitney F135 turbofan engine in flight. These tests were conducted to ensure that the aircraft can regain power and be flown safely in the event of an unanticipated engine flameout. Twelve test cases were completed, and the F135 repeatedly restarted on command. Test pilot Jeff Knowles then flew the aircraft back to Fort Worth in late October. By the end of 2009, all nineteen F-35 test aircraft will be built, and test activities will be under way at Edwards and at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland.
