The 53rd Wing at Eglin AFB, Florida, recently wrapped up the operational testing of a new software upgrade necessary for the Block 50 F-16 to employ the Joint Standoff Weapon with the HARM targeting system.
The software, called 50T5, allows the F-16 to talk to the weapon, much as a computer operating system talks to a new printer. The two weeks of operational testing, which took place over the Nevada and Utah deserts, combined the software, missile, and support assets in a realistic combat scenario. Preliminary data from the series of tests show that the Air Force will be able to field 50T5 and JSOW before the next Aerospace Expeditionary Force is deployed.
