Sniper Pod Testing
|
|
The 416th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards AFB, California, began testing the Sniper XR targeting pod for the F-16 in April. The pod, a self-contained sensor and laser designator system with improved target detection and recognition, provides tactical aircraft with a twenty-four-hour precision strike capability against land- and sea-based targets. It also contains an infrared camera for thermal imaging and an additional optical camera that adjusts for daylight and low thermal contrast conditions. Pilots can use the pod to identify tactical targets at greatly improved standoff ranges compared to current targeting systems. The pods will be initially installed on Air Force F-16 Block 50/52 aircraft and on some ANG F-16s. |
