First F-35 Vehicle Management Computer Delivered
|
|
BAE Systems delivered the first vehicle management computer to the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter team at Lockheed Martin in mid-May. The VMC unit contains hardware and software for the F-35s digital flight-control and utility systems. The computer uses two Motorola Power PC microprocessors, each providing more than ten times the performance of previous-generation systems. Each F-35 will have three VMCs. The triple redundancy ensures the aircraft continues to operate normally if one or even two boxes are damaged or malfunctioning. The first VMCs will be installed in the F-35 Vehicle Systems Integration Facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The facility simulates the entire airplane by integrating and testing components such as hydraulic systems, utilities, and subsystems. Delivery of the VMC early in the F-35 development schedule maximizes the time for development, integration, and testing of aircraft systems software. |
