C-5 Schoolhouse Transfers To Lackland

C-5 An early morning takeoff of a C-5A on 29 June ended thirty-eight years of training C-5 aircrews at Altus AFB, Oklahoma, and formally transferred that responsibility to Air Force Reserve Command’s 443rd Airlift Wing at Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. A crew from the 167th Airlift Wing, the Air National Guard unit at Martinsburg, West Virginia, flew the aircraft to its new home. The first aircraft was delivered from Lockheed in Marietta, Georgia, to the then-56th Military Airlift Squadron, which became the first operational C-5 flying unit on 17 December 1969. More than 16,000 C-5 pilots, navigators, and loadmasters from active duty, Air National Guard, and Reserve units were trained at Altus.
