The hydraulic door housing the M61A2 six-barreled 20mm lightweight Gatling gun on the upper right wing of the F-22 Raptor was successfully tested during an August flight of Raptor 4002. The test, conducted above the Mojave Desert in California, was designed to see how the door would react when opened at high speeds. The gun, which was built by General Dynamics in Burlington, Vermont, can fire 6,000 rounds per minute. The Raptor is designed to carry 480 rounds. Almost all current US military fighters and attack jets have been equipped with the M61 or its follow-on models since the 1950s. |
