Alabama Celebrates Safety Record

The Alabama ANG established an aviation first in April 2001 when its 187th FW became the first general-purpose F-16 flying unit to surpass 50,000 accident-free flying hours. The unit, which has had eighteen years of mishap-free flying, began flying the F-16 in 1988. “It’s the culture within the 187th that produces a safe environment,” said Charlie Savage, Eastern Regional Manager for Lockheed Martin. “That sense of safety, combined with the right people and jets, brought them to this point.”

“An outstanding safety program and an exceptional engine shop combined with pride in workmanship and a durable airframe are key factors in safe flying,” said Col. John White, commander of the 187th.
