| Australian F-111s At Red Flag |
|
The Royal Australian Air Force deployed six F-111s to Nellis AFB, Nevada, for two weeks in late August and early September. They flew eight missions daily in the interdiction role as part of the blue forces at Red Flag 02-4. The five F-111Cs and one RF-111C from 1 Squadron of the 28 Wing at RAAF Amberly made the deployment with two RAAF C-130 Hercules. With fuel stops on the Kwajalein atoll and Hawaii going and coming to and from the United States, the F-111s did not have tanker support and had to fly at slower than normal speeds to stay with the C-130s. The excursion marked the first deployment of Australian F-111s to the continental United States since March of 1999 when 1 Squadron sent six F-111s to Nellis for Green Flag. The last US F-111s were retired in May of 1998. The last two examples of the EF-111A were ferried to AMARC at Davis Monthan AFB, Arizona, in June of that year. |
