The US Air Force selected Lockheed Martin in July to modify ten existing C-130 Hercules airlifters to the HC-130P combat search and rescue aircraft configuration. Under the program, four former EC-130E airborne battlefield management aircraft and six WC-130H hurricane hunter aircraft will be converted to a common HC-130P configuration. Air Force Special Operations Command uses the HC-130Ps as aerial tankers and for airborne delivery of pararescue jumpers and emergency supplies. Up to forty-three equipment and structural modifications will be carried out, depending on the configuration of the aircraft. The modification program, now underway at Lockheed Martin facilities in Greenville, South Carolina, is to be completed in 2007. |
