Joint Task Force Liberia, a 4,000-strong team providing support to the military forces of the Economic Community of West African States, better known as ECOWAS, took the lead in the effort to stabilize Liberia in July. A Humanitarian Assessment Survey Team, a team of military specialists whose purpose is to determine the requirements for a US Civil-Military Operations Center and follow-on civil-military operations in a humanitarian crisis area, was airlifted in on 6 July. As of 23 September, 945 passengers and 648 short tons of supplies had been airlifted either to Senegal or Sierra Leone, where the operation is being staged, or directly to Liberia. |
