Springfield Changes Command

F/A-22 To Tyndall Col. Richard L. Lohnes took over command of the 178th FW of the Ohio ANG in August. Lohnes replaced Col. Thomas Pape, who became commander of the unit in July 2001. The new commander, a native of Springfield, Ohio, has more than 4,300 hours in jet fighters, including combat missions over Iraq in 1996. Pape ended up with slightly more than 5,000 hours of total flight time including more than 1,200 hours in the F-16. Coincidentally, Pape’s son, Jeremy, is a C-130 pilot with the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield, Ohio. The father and son posed in front of their respective rides after the senior Pape’s final flight with the 178th.
