Midair Collision Prevention System Tested
|
|
The Air Forces Automatic Air Collision Avoidance System successfully put two F-16s into automated maneuvers to avoid collision during an August test flight at Edwards AFB, California. Maj. James Less and Swedish Air Force Maj. Richard Ljungberg flew the Variable Stability In-Flight Simulator Test Aircraft VISTA/F-16 and Maj. Scott Wierzbanowski flew a standard F-16 during the test. During the flight, which was conducted on actual aircraft for the first time, the two aircraft repeatedly approached each other, and the Auto ACAS activated every time to separate them without pilot input. The Auto ACAS program is a cooperative effort between the United States and Sweden. |
