Aero Union received a production contract award from the US Forest Service in June for the new Airborne Fire Fighting System, or AFFS, for the Lockheed Martin C-130E/H/J model transports. AFFS, developed for the Forest Service in cooperation with Lockheed Martin and the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command, will enter service later this year. The new roll-on, roll-off system replaces the older Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System, or MAFFS, that has been in service for more than thirty years. AFFS can deliver up to 4,000 gallons of retardant or water/foam using a variety of drop profiles required to attack various fire conditions. Moreover, its coverage level is double that of MAFFS, and the new system holds 1,000 more gallons than the older system. |
