 The Royal Australian Air Force began Operation Helpen Fren (“help a friend”) on 24 July when the first contingent of Australian Defence Force troops was flown to Honiara in the Solomon Islands on a C-130J-30. Apart from the contribution of the C-130 crews in transporting personnel and equipment to the Solomons, the RAAF’s commitment included an air element of two Caribou aircraft and crews for airlift support. At the invitation of the Solomon Islands government, the ADF personnel are part of the police-led regional assistance mission that also includes civilian contingents. The immediate purpose of Helpen Fren is to restore law and order in the Solomons. |
