An Air Force Reserve Command C-141 crews quick action on 18 June prevented the crew of a Canadian cargo aircraft from ditching in the South Pacific. The Convair 580 crewmembers realized they were off course when navigational equipment indicated they were over land, but all they could see was the ocean. The 452nd Air Mobility Wing crew, on its way to Christchurch, was contacted by rescue officials, turned and flew east, and within an hour sighted the wayward aircraft 250 nautical miles from New Zealand. The C-141 crew then led the Convair pilots to Gisborne, where they landed two hours later, nearly out of fuel. |
